Hucknall Labour says NO to 3000 new builds on Green Belt land
At the Cabinet meeting of Ashfield District Council on the afternoon of 20th September, the Ashfield Independents agreed to go to public consultation on their new Local Plan which puts over 50% of the new houses in Hucknall. The Plan shows a new development which will bring 3000 extra houses to Hucknall, built on Hucknall’s Green Belt at Whyburn Farm. We understand that people need somewhere to live, but the Ashfield Independents' plan to put 53% of all new housing in Hucknall (rather than equally shared between Kirkby or Sutton) is not only unfair, but simply not viable without the right infrastructure, something which is not provided in the Plan.
Councillor Lauren Mitchell, Leader of the Labour Group, said: In 2018 the Ashfield Independents threw out Labour's Local Plan because the now Leader of Ashfield District Council, Cllr Jason Zadrozny, claimed it "wanted to build in the green spaces we hold so dear". The Ashfield Independents are now planning on dumping 3000 houses on the Green Belt in Hucknall. Obviously the green spaces that the Independents holds so dear don't apply to Hucknall.
These plans would be disastrous for Hucknall and will increase the pressure local services are already being put under. We are encouraging residents to make their voices heard by submitting their views to the consultation when it is launched, in addition to holding a public meeting in early October to encourage Hucknall residents to come together to oppose these plans.
Councillor Keir Morrison added: The amount of new houses planned for Hucknall is untenable. Not only are the Ashfield Independents planning on bulldozing our Green Belt but this will also put further strain on the towns healthcare crisis. Hucknall hasn’t got the infrastructure to cope with more new builds, we’re not against new development but let’s have the schools, doctors and necessary services in place first.
John Wilkinson, from the group Hucknall Needs More Doctors, said: In 2019 Cllr Zadrozy promised to ensure our roads can cope....and that our residents have access to health services like doctors and dentists. The Ashfield Independents have failed to give us the doctors we need for houses already built - now they want another 3000 houses in Hucknall. Their promises on access to health services are worthless. This plan has to be stopped.
We will share details on how to object to the plans as soon as they are available.
